Search Strategies

How do you find info on living artists?

  1. Determine a search term. For a living artist, it may be possible to search their name in "quotes" for instance, "Jane Doe".

  2. Then, set up a Zotero collection to serve as repository for all of your search records. (You'll also need the Zotero extension for Chrome.)

  3. If the artist has a professional website, I would start there.

  4. I tend to search books first, then articles. For books, I'll begin with WorldCat.

  5. Then, I'll use the same search terms in some journal/article databases. I usually start with JSTOR, and then go to Art Bibliographies Modern.

  6. Finally, I might check out some newspaper sources.

  7. Once I compile the full bibliography, then I download, interlibrary loan (ILL) request, or find on the internet each source on the list. I like to put together a giant PDF binder so that I can read it in Voice Dream. I work in alphabetical order and work through each source, adding a very brief (1–2 sentences) annotation.
